Courses & Licenses

Recreational Pilot license

Successful completion of the Recreational Pilot Program qualifies graduates for a Recreational Pilot Permit issued by Transport Canada and a Certificate of Qualification. Recreational Pilots may fly single-engine aircraft during daylight hours with a maximum of one passenger, as well as ultra-light aircraft. Night flying and flights outside Canadian domestic airspace are not permitted.

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age 16 for the flight test. Students may train and attend class up until then.
  • Must be able to obtain a class 1, 3, and 4 aviation medical certificate.
  • Must pass a written Transport Canada exam after ground school (online classes available).
  • Minimum 25 hours flight training (15 hours duel, 5 hours solo practice, plus cross-country flight).

Private pilot license (PPL)

The Private Pilot License is the foundation for further flight training, including commercial training if desired. Private Pilots can carry passengers and begin with privileges to fly single-engine, non-high-performance aircraft. With the proper additional ratings, they can also fly at night, and instrument flight conditions.

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age 17 for license (able to train beforehand).
  • Able to obtain a class 1 or 3 aviation medical certificate.
  • Complete a minimum of 40 hours ground school covering multiple subjects.
  • Complete a minimum of 45 hours of flight training.

Commercial Pilot license (CPL)

If you are looking to start a new career in aviation, then the Commercial Pilot License (CPL) is the next step after the Private Pilot License. It allows you to fly Canadian registered, single-engine, non-high-performance aircraft for hire. Training includes commercial ground school, the written exam, and “time building” as pilot-in-command. During this phase, pilots can also complete their night rating and the required dual instrument training.

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age of 18 for license (able to train beforehand).
  • Must obtain a class 1 aviation medical certificate.
  • Complete a minimum 80-hour ground school course covering multiple subjects.
  • Complete a minimum of 200 hours of flight training, 100 hours of which will be as pilot in command. Includes 20 hours of cross-country flight.

Night Rating

Requirements:

  • Private or Commercial license.
  • Current Class 1 or 3 aviation medical certificate.
  • Minimum 20 hours flight time including 10 hours night flying time.
  • No flight test is needed, although training is provided by a flight instructor.

Instructor rating

Earning a flight instructor rating is one of the best ways to kick start your career in aviation. A Flight Instructor Rating allows CPL holders to teach others to fly, making it an excellent way to gain flight experience and build skills. It’s ideal for those passionate about teaching while advancing their own theoretical and practical knowledge.

Prerequisites:

  • Commercial Pilots license (CPL).
  • Class 1 Aviation medical certificate.
  • 25 hours of ground school instruction covering teaching techniques of instruction.
  • 30 hours dual flight instruction with a class 1 flight instructor.

Turbine Transition Training

Provincial Airways is pleased to offer a comprehensive turbine transition program that prepares aerial application pilots for graduation into higher performance higher valued aircraft. Following an extensive 24 hour ground school syllabus that teaches the relevant turbine engine concepts, and principles.
